1940 Income field on the death screen

In 1940, census enumerators were instructed to enter an individual's income on the census. If that income was over $5,000, the enumerator was to enter: $5,000+. Previously, we could not enter the "+" in the field. That has been corrected on the death screen (not on the regular 1940 inputting screen).

When inputting income on the death screen for the 1940 census, if the enumerator wrote 5,000+, please type, "5000+" in the field. There is no need to make additional notes in the remarks field.

Some interesting grandchildren

A grandson Noelle is working on is Dick Foran. He was an actor and singer and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Google his name and articles about him will pop right up.

On a less happy note, one of my great grandsons was murdered. He was "bothering" (I'm not sure what that means, but that's what it says) his ex-wife at her house. The ex-father-in-law lived next door and came over and shot the guy.

Instructions for entering occupations and industry

The reason for this change is to aid in the coding of the occupation data. This will allow us to collect multiple occupations on the Death Information screen and will require matching the occupation to the corresponding industry.

      • This change applies ONLY to the OCCUPATION and INDUSTRY fields on the Death Information (OBIT) screen.

      • DO NOT use the new rule on the 1930 and 1940 OCCUPATION and INDUSTRY fields.

      • It may help to consider the Occupation and Industry fields Occ1 and Occ2. These fields can each accept up to 250 characters. If you think you have input several hundred characters (DO NOT COUNT!) advance to the Industry field to enter additional information.

      • INDUSTRY will be input in parenthesis ( ) following the occupation.

      • Multiple OCCUPATIONs will be separated by semicolons.

New format:  OCCUPATION (INDUSTRY); OCCUPATION; OCCUPATION (INDUSTRY)

Note that you can still input an OCCUPATION without a corresponding INDUSTRY.

Continue to input RETIRED with its associated OCCUPATION i.e. RETIRED CARPENTER. In the coding process this will receive 2 codes, retired and carpenter.

Inputting goal

A reasonable goal for the week would be to complete 23% of the sample by next Wednesday. That equals 650 RecIds. So we need to finish 34 RecIds to meet our goal. 

If you want to be extra ambitious and go for 23.5%, we need to complete 48 Recids for a total of 664.

Most weeks, we complete between 25 and 35 RecIds.

National Walking Day

I just read that today is National Walking Day. Celebrate by taking a 30-minute walk. You can walk inside or outside (with social distancing, of course), with family or by yourself. 

While you walk, listen to music, an audio book or podcast, or just the sounds of the world around you. It will be an excellent way to get some energy back after sitting at your desk all day and working.

I know I miss our afternoon constitutionals at the office. Have fun walking!
