Just for fun - occupations

Sandy sent this along.

For fun, can you tell what these occupations and industries are without looking at the manuscript? (as indexed in 1940) in North Dakota all from several pages in a row.  They weren't really that hard to read.    Some of them cracked me up.

Electrican -- Powa Go

Scanterss -- at home

Carpenter -- Body Instruction

Clerk -- Rital grocery

Wastry Cook -- Cofe

Scenstress -- At home

Odd work -- Grocery Slon

Station Engineer -- Pump home

Locomotive Empmre

Naking care of children -- private family

Oil Basines -- Private

Housework - Trwot

Housekeeper -- Prost

Passer --  Parisl

Haw Driver -- Beauty Shop

Buttonmaker -- Creamery

Electrical -- Electric Brassieres  (my personal favorite)

Here are some that you wouldn't necessarily know are wrong without looking at them. (Correct word is in parenthesis)

Salesman -- Dresses (Wholesale)
Binder -- Private Co (Printing co)
Salesman -- Meat machine (Meat market)
Oil Engineer -- Meta factory  (Civil Engineer -- Metal Factory)

And these stumped me.  I think I partially figured them out.  Ideas? Feel free to submit guesses in the comments:

1930 and 1940 census on the death screen

I don't think we've done it before, so we will do it now. A new rule: only input census for the soldiers' grandchildren on the death screen. If you feel you need to input the census for anyone else, please use the regular 1930 and 1940 inputting screens.

If you discover that you've input information for 1930 and 1940 on the death screen that you shouldn't have input (wrong person, wrong generation, already input), please delete it. You cannot just uncheck the boxes for 1930 and 1940. All this does is hide the inputting fields on the screen. The data are still there. Please go into each of the fields and delete the unwanted information; then uncheck the box.

1940 Income field on the death screen

In 1940, census enumerators were instructed to enter an individual's income on the census. If that income was over $5,000, the enumerator was to enter: $5,000+. Previously, we could not enter the "+" in the field. That has been corrected on the death screen (not on the regular 1940 inputting screen).

When inputting income on the death screen for the 1940 census, if the enumerator wrote 5,000+, please type, "5000+" in the field. There is no need to make additional notes in the remarks field.

Income in 1940

In 1940, census enumerators were instructed to enter an individual's income on the census. If that income was over $5,000, the enumerator was to enter: $5,000+. Since we cannot include the "+" in the Income field, please do the following, beginning immediately.

Type 5000 in the Income field
Type Income: $5,000+ in the individual's Remarks field

Here are the instructions for the enumerators:

Number of weeks unemployed

There was a question recently about the duration of unemployment on the 1940 census. Sandy looked up the instructions to the enumerators. Here is what she found.

525. Column 27. If Seeking Work or Assigned to Public Emergency Work ("Yes" in Col. 22 or 23): Duration of Unemployment up to March 30, 1940-In Weeks.-There must be an entry in col. 27 indicating the duration of unemployment in weeks up to March 30, 1940, for each person who is seeking work ("Yes" in col. 23) and each person on public emergency work ("Yes" in col. 22). Col. 27 must be left blank unless "Yes" is entered in col. 22 or 23. Note that all entries are to be made in weeks even if the person has been unemployed for several years. (See table in par. 529).

529. The following table will assist you in calculating duration of unemployment:
