release.

·
Coralee is compiling the new (corrected) data
with the targeted wives for Dora. Since we finished correcting the GEDCOMs,
Coralee is extracting that data and will download VCC data today.
Grandchildren Links
to 1940
·
Coralee did some calculations regarding merging
the two different 1940 full census sources, and looked closely at the
occupation coding in the full-count file that she was using to retrieve the
occupation codes.
o
She thinks it would take months longer to
complete the merging process and have all of their codes. There are a lot of
inconsistencies in their coding that she can't account for, and a lot of
differences between their coding and our coding.
o
It will be faster and consistent with the rest
of our data for us to code the occupations ourselves.
Sample

o
What was collected
o
Which data collection screens used
o
Where data is available
o
Who worked on it

it with you.

Only one person is still working on wives. We
are deciding whether another person can help her finish.

It will not take us much longer to finish the
limited 1940 variables. What should we do next? Add death screens for Sample B granddaughters?
MVCC Update
Now that finals are over, Giles is waiting to be set up as an NBER consultant before resuming work on the MVCC screen fixes, changes and report functions.

Update on
Full-count Merging
·
Coralee
has been working on the 1940 full count census merging and has discovered more
problems than initially anticipated in merging with our data. Here are the problems she has found:
o The variables that the IPUMS
people suggested merging on aren't in 1940 after all, not in the IPUMS file or
in the GEDCOMs. Coralee has some alternate ideas for merging, but it will take
longer to figure out.
o The mechanical matching of the
names (finding the most similar name on the page) is going to be very
problematic for women with maiden/married names. Coralee thinks she has a way
around this problem, but, again, it will just will take longer.
o The biggest issue is that when she
looks closely at one person in all three places (our sample, the full-count, and
the census manuscript), the variables that we are interested in are null values
in the full-count file, but present on the census manuscript. This is a sample
size of one, she says, so maybe this problem isn't as widespread after all. She
is looking at it closer today.
·
Coralee
is also still working on getting occupation codes from 1930. With the amount of
time it will take her to do 1940, she was wondering if maybe it would be better
for the inputters to go back to the manuscripts for 1940 values and input them
in the 1940 screen (or the 1940 section on the obit screen) while she finishes
the 1930 work. However, we realize we
are limited in time before people’s contracts run out.
Here is our weekly update for November 17, 2021.

in a few weeks.
MVCC Update
·
Due to whiplash from a car accident the end of
the semester approaching, Giles says that reports development for the MVCC
screens has slowed significantly.
Grands Progress
·
Coralee continues working on the full count census
merging process.
·
She is finalizing the grands dataset, making
sure the codebook is current and data is ready.
·
She has the codebook up ready for us to review
and edit. We are trying to determine the
best method for accomplishing this so that several of us can provide input.
·
Sandy completed the location coding, so Coralee
will now incorporate those codes into the dictionary and then update the grands
dataset with the new codes.
End of Project
·
Alterra has requested that Noelle send her a
list of equipment that people have at home along with as much detail as
possible, including acquisition dates.
Someone, maybe Annalisa, should be able to find this information on the
server, probably in the last (2019?) tax inventory.
Future
Possibilities
·
Are any UCLA grad students working with the data
that might have some ideas for future grants?

Grands Progress
·
Coralee is working on the codebook and melding
Samples A and B while awaiting word from Matt Nelson to see if he can help with
1940 and the full count merging.
MVCC Update
·
After completing an abbreviated version of the
mil info to help while we were working on Urban, Giles is now focusing on
creating a report function for the MVCC screens.
