National Book Festival!
The twentieth National Book Festival begins today and will last all weekend. In the past, this has been an in-person event including author readings and panels, book signings, and book- and reading-themed activities. I look forward to it every year. Because of the pandemic, the festival has been moved online. It will include both pre-recorded, on-demand sessions and live Q & As. And since it's entirely online, you don't have to be able to get to DC to participate.
Here is a list of participating authors.
The authors present on different stages according to the topics they write about or audiences they write for. Here is the list of stages:
- Children
- Teens
- Family, Food & Field
- Fiction
- Genre Fiction
- History & Biography sponsored by Wells Fargo
- Poetry & Prose sponsored by National Endowment for the Arts
- Science

note about WWII draft cards: There is an issue for old man’s draft cards (for men born between 1877 -1897) from the
following states: DE, MD, PA, WV. They were microfilmed with a back and front
of the card in one image, but the two sides do not go together. You have to get the front of the card from
the first image and click on the following image (clicking on the arrow to the
right of your card) to get the back side that corresponds to your guy.

ALGERON Sidney Jenkins is the
top card in this image

The top card is Allen Albert Jenkins’ front card

Nebraska death index
As you all know, getting death information has been hard (or impossible) for individuals who died in Nebraska. It's just gotten a little easier. Irene has added a link to The Nebraska Death Index to her death indexes spreadsheet. Here is Irene's description: 1904-1955 is a browsable digitized index and 1956-1968 is a searchable database.
So, obviously this doesn't solve all the problems we had finding death information, but it helps.

For our goal this week, let's try for 100 soldiers. We will probably be temporarily reassigning a couple of people to do some pilot work for the new grant. That will slow our progress a little on the grandchildren sample.
