Recently, there has been some confusion about the state code "AS." This is a valid state code. It means "At Sea" or "Aboard Ship." It is not uncommon to find this in the census.
If you're not sure whether something is a valid state code, please look it up in your manual. There is a list of all the state/country codes and what they mean.
